The combination of fire and glass quickly became a fast-growing trend for homeowners and designers since it was introduced to you in the early-2000s.

It has become popular among us to use in fire pits, tabletop fireplaces, and fire bowls ever since.

Fire glass is a type of tempered, a small piece of glass you use to add color and reflection in gas-burning fireplaces, fire pits, or fire bowls.

Here, you will get to know the elementary details about fire glass.

What is it made of?

Fire glasses are rolled and polished so that they aren’t sharp or dangerous.

The glass replaces logs in a fire in order to produce no smoke, ash, or messy soot.

Tempered glasses like fire pit glass, fire rocks, fireplace glass, flammable glass, fire beads, lava glass, etc., are produced by no unique manufacturing process.

It is only specially shaped and colored to be shiny, bright, and reflective.

It is commonly made out of recycled glass, making it a brilliant repurposed product. Fire glass is decorative, and it won’t burn, melt, soot, or explode as it’s been tempered. It’s non-toxic, safe to use, and does not emit any harmful byproducts into the air.

How many varieties are there?

There is a wide range of colors for fire glasses in the market. You can pick from different shapes, such as beads, diamonds, dots, cubes, or rounded pebbles. The size ranges from 1/4 inch, 1/2 inch, 1 inch to 5/8 inch; it comes in various colors, and there are reflective coatings on many of them.

How does it really work?

The fire glass is used as a filler and sits atop the flame, usually in a tray or on a flat surface inside the fireplace.

As it is inflammable, you can use both natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas to create a fire in your fire pit or fireplace. Make sure you purchase the correct connection kit that corresponds with your chosen starter fluid in order to make it work properly.

Keep in mind that fire glass is not the fuel for a fire! It is merely decorative, and it won’t burn without another source like natural gas.

There is no reason to assume that fire glass is similar to charcoal and may burn without any propellant.

How long does it sustain?

Fire glass can withstand up to 1400 degrees Fahrenheit, but you need to be careful about the sudden change of temperatures.

As it doesn’t handle rapid temperature change well, if you slowly and gradually increase the heat of your burner, the glasses may not crack in forever.

You can use it for a good long time as it doesn’t burn, melt, or lose color at high temperatures.

How to clean fire glass?

As the glass itself is unchanged by the fire, so it emits almost nothing. But it can accumulate dust and black soot produced by the burning hydrocarbons. So it needs to be cleaned from time to time to keep it shiny and reflective.

Don’t worry! Cleaning the fire glass is the simplest thing ever.

You can brush off the dust and then clean the fire glass with vinegar and water. Be careful that lighting the flames while there is any water on the glass can lead to uneven heating and cause the fire glass to shatter explosively.

You should wear gloves when handling glass and any broken pieces to sift out and recycle.
